Updated for the 2026 transition

FMCSA Motus, explained

On May 14, 2026, FMCSA replaced its old registration systems with Motus. If you've tried to file your MCS-150 or register an authority since then and nothing looks familiar, you're not doing it wrong — the whole system changed. Here's the plain version.

You sign in with Login.gov

The old USDOT-PIN sign-in is gone. Motus uses an identity-verified Login.gov account — the same federal sign-in used across government sites. First time, you create one and verify your identity.

The old portals are retired

URS, the legacy FMCSA Portal, and USDOT-PIN were all replaced. Registration, the MCS-150 biennial update, and authority applications now run through Motus.

Your deadlines didn't change

Only the system changed, not the rules. Your MCS-150 is still due every 24 months (and within 30 days of a major change); insurance, UCR, and 2290 are unchanged.

How to file your MCS-150 in Motus (free, ~15 min)

  1. 1

Create or sign in to an identity-verified Login.gov account.

  2. 2

Go to FMCSA's Motus system and claim/open your carrier record.

  3. 3

Complete the biennial update with your current operation details (mileage, vehicles, etc.).

  4. 4

Submit, then confirm your USDOT shows active on your public record.

Common transition problems

  • Errors on submit. Widely reported during the transition. Screenshot your attempt with the date, retry, and keep the proof in case a deadline is affected.
  • Can't find your record. You may need to claim your existing USDOT record and link it to your Login.gov identity the first time in.
  • Login.gov identity verification. Motus requires an identity-verified account — allow extra time if you're setting one up for the first time.

Make sure the switch didn't break something

Transitions are exactly when records slip — a filing that didn't post, a status that flipped. Check your public FMCSA record free, then let 1Kompliance watch it daily.

Common questions

When did FMCSA switch to Motus?
FMCSA retired its legacy systems (URS, the FMCSA Portal, and USDOT-PIN sign-in) and moved registration to Motus on May 14, 2026. If you haven't logged in since then, the process looks different from what you remember.
How do I file my MCS-150 in Motus?
Sign in to Motus with an identity-verified Login.gov account, open (or claim) your carrier record, complete the biennial update with your current operation details, and submit. It's free and takes about 15 minutes.
Motus keeps erroring out — what do I do?
Transition-period errors are a common complaint. Document your attempt (screenshots + date), retry, and check FMCSA's registration page for current guidance. Keep your proof of attempt in case a deadline is affected.
Will I be deactivated if I can't file because of Motus problems?
FMCSA paused some automated deactivations during the transition — but don't count on the pause. File on schedule, and if the system blocks you, keep dated proof of your attempts.
