Step by step

  1. 1

    Have your EIN ready

Form 2290 requires an EIN. If you don't have one, get it free from the IRS first (allow ~2 weeks for a new EIN to be usable).

  2. 2

    Pick an IRS-authorized e-file provider

E-filing returns your stamped Schedule 1 in minutes and is required for 25+ vehicles.

  3. 3

    Enter your vehicle

VIN, taxable gross weight, and first-use month.

  4. 4

    Pay the tax

By electronic funds withdrawal, EFTPS, card, or check.

  5. 5

    Save the stamped Schedule 1

You'll need it for IRP and plate registration.

Worth knowing

  • The tax year runs Jul 1–Jun 30; the return is due Aug 31 for trucks used in July.
  • For a truck bought mid-year, it's due the last day of the month after first use.
