IFTA quarterly return — how to file it yourself, free

IFTA quarterly returns sneak up on owner-operators. The Q2 2026 return (April–June) is due July 31, 2026 — here's how to file it yourself in about 20 minutes, no paid service required.

Q2 2026 due July 31, 2026

IFTA returns are due the last day of the month after each quarter — Apr 30, Jul 31, Oct 31, Jan 31. Late filing runs a $50 minimum or 10% of the tax owed, whichever is bigger, plus interest. Reconfirm your base state's exact date.

What IFTA is, and who has to file

IFTA (the International Fuel Tax Agreement) is how you report and pay fuel tax across the states you run. It isn't federal — it's run through the base state that issued your IFTA license and decals.

If you hold an IFTA license and run a qualified vehicle across state lines, you file a return every quarter — reporting your miles and fuel purchased in each jurisdiction so the tax gets settled up.

You still file even with zero miles

If your truck didn't run at all last quarter but your IFTA license is active, you still have to file a zero return — report zeros for every jurisdiction. "I had no miles" is one of the most common ways owner-operators rack up penalties.

You'll need total miles per state and total gallons purchased per state for the quarter. Fuel receipts plus a trip log (or an ELD mileage export) already have what you need.

How to file it (free, through your base state)

  1. 1

Total your miles by state and your fuel gallons by state for the quarter, from your ELD/trip records and fuel receipts.

  2. 2

Log into your base state's IFTA portal — search "[your state] IFTA online filing." IFTA runs through the state that issued your license, not a federal site.

  3. 3

Enter miles and gallons per jurisdiction; the portal computes the net tax owed or credit.

  4. 4

Pay (or take the credit) and save the confirmation. Do it before the deadline to skip the penalty.

There's no filing fee — you pay only the net fuel tax you actually owe (or take a credit). You never need a paid service for a one-truck IFTA return; your base state's portal lets you file it yourself in about 20 minutes.
